From observations of star-forming regions in the Milky Way and in external galaxies, dense gas has been found to be a site of star formation. One study, observed a strong linear relationship between the recent star formation rate, SFR, as traced by the total infrared emission, and the dense gas traced by HCN luminosity within their sample of 53 whole galaxies and bright galaxy centers which varied from normal spirals to ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs)...
